Champions of Learning Awards to celebrate educators across WV
April 15, 2026
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — An event that will honor teachers and other school personnel was announced by the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Chamber Foundation Wednesday.
The Department of Education says the Champions of Learning awards will replace the existing Excellence in Education Celebration and will honor school employees from across West Virginia.
The Champions of Learning Awards will be celebrated with a formal gala on Sept. 8 in Charleston.
The awards will include honors for Teacher of the Year, Service Personnel of the Year, Counselor of the Year and Principal of the Year. This will be the first year that awards will be given to counselors and principals.
“The Champions of Learning celebration represents an exciting evolution of a longstanding tradition,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “By broadening the recognition to include more education professionals, we are showcasing additional team members who support learning and academic achievement in the Mountain State. We have said that it takes all of us to support our public schools. Including the business community is an important part of the celebration of education. I am truly grateful to the West Virginia Chamber Foundation for taking up this worthy cause.”
The gala will also recognize regional businesses that demonstrate exceptional commitment to education.
“Public education is the cornerstone of progress. The business community is eager to support the success of our students and those who work tirelessly to help them achieve their goals,” said West Virginia Chamber President Steve Roberts. “We look forward to working with the entire community to help students succeed.”
The department says applications for awards opened on March 2, and county superintendents have been informed on how to submit candidates.
