May 2019 Jobs Report Brings Great News for W.Va.

Charleston, W.Va. – The monthly state data release from Workforce WV that became public today shows that West Virginia’s economy continues to show strong growth. Today’s release included employment numbers for May 2019.
West Virginia Chamber President Steve Roberts stated, “the numbers released today are truly jaw-dropping in how good they are for our state’s economic outlook. We haven’t seen a May jobs report that is this positive since May 2009, a full decade ago.”
According to Workforce WV, private sector employment in West Virginia increased 13,500 from May 2018 – May 2019. Some of the highlights by sector are as follows:
- Total Nonfarm Payroll Employment is reported at 735,500 jobs – a net gain of 5,200 jobs
- Total Employment is 752,600 – net gain of 11,500
- Private Sector Employment is 584,000 – net gain of 13,500
- Mining & Logging is at 22,800 – a gain of 100
- Manufacturing is at 48,000 – a gain of 1,000
- Construction is at 47,200 – a gain of 9,900
- Educational & Health Services is at 129,900 – a gain of 1,800
Roberts continued, “This report is clear evidence that West Virginia’s economic comeback story is real. It also demonstrates that when pro-jobs and pro-growth policies are adopted, West Virginia’s potential is limitless. Special credit is due to the West Virginia Legislature for maintaining a focus on economic growth for the past several years.”
